5 Tips To Maintain A Healthy Thanksgiving Holiday
Thanksgiving IS the epitome of Family. Food. Fiesta. I make sure to keep my loved ones close to me during this awesome week. And those that can’t be near, I keep them in my heart and thoughts.
Thanksgiving time has a huge food focus (which I’m all about), but it’s not a time to let food festivities take over and change our healthy, every-day living. So here are some holiday tips for you so that you enjoy your big turkey day without expanding your waistline.
#1. Enjoy your food! Remember to take your time to eat your food and savor the flavor! When at the party or festivity, take 1 plate of food and portion control it! Choose 1-2 forkfuls of the foods you really want to eat and you’ll keep that moderation in check.
#2. Family. Food. Fiesta. Remember to embrace these moments that we share with our loved ones. Food is present, but it’s really about being with the people we love. Eat slowly, put the fork down between bites, and make conversation with your loved ones. The slower you eat will allow your body to recognize it’s full (it takes 20 minutes to realize this).
#3. Sharing is Caring! Bring a dish to the event that you know is healthy and delicious! Check out my recipes for some tasty green beans. If you bring dessert, leave it at the house you attend. If your hosting the dinner, send people home with leftovers so the tempting, high-calorie items aren’t left in your home.
#4. Remember to eat every 3-4 hours. People tend to skip meals during the holidays thinking they will be eating that “big” meal at the event/party/Thanksgiving. When you skip a meal, you run the risk of over-eating and eating rapidly at the meal. Make sure to eat every 3-4 hours to maintain hunger levels. Eat the regular-sized meal. If you get hungry afterwards, you can always have a snack. Luckily, Thanksgiving will not be your last meal, so you can eat again later.
#5. Relax and enjoy! Take a breath! Take a quick stretch. Stress can lead to imbalance and can result in excessive eating. Stick to your healthy holiday habits and protect yourself from stress overload. Treasure the time off and stay focused. It’s amazing how much simple breathing or a quick stretch or walk can relieve stress levels and calm ourselves.
Have a LOVELY turkey day and enjoy the biggest Family. Food. Fiesta. day of the year!!!
